I am, admittedly, so excited to share an interview with one of my favourite Aussie labels of all time - long-time readers will know that so many of Lucky's dresses are my going-out bible - and that's saying a lot. Lucky13, for me, wraps up the edge and badass from 500 million corners of inspiration, then applies it all to something pretty or feminine, always with a strong theme in mind. Especially with their latest collection, there's always space left for you to play around and take some risks.
And so, I present to you, the girls of Lucky13 :)
Hi there, how’s it going?
Awesome thank you – how you doing?
Tell us a bit about how Lucky13 started out.
Irena Geller (The Designer) kicked it off a few years back (Irena is the gal responsible for bringing the Playboy clothing brand from Hugh Hefner in to Australia). After working so hard on the Playboy brand and making it so successful, Irena thought Hey I should be focussing more on my own brand, which is where we are today!
What would you describe as the Lucky 13 vibe?
Rocker Chic! We make clothes that are sexy and also rock n roll!
So your latest collection for Summer is in stores soon – can you tell us a bit about the ideas behind it? Its all inspired by Alice In Wonderland – fantastical colours, playful dreams that sort of thing. We’ve been really imaginative in our use of a fabrics; cottons, patterned rayons, silk combinations, and we’ve distressed fabric in parts, added crinkle finishes and perforated touches and of course stuck to our leather, Alice loves leather! Imagine Playful Alice skipping down the garden path & through the gate towards Summer.
What kind of work goes into designing one piece?
Some pieces happen very quickly and others take weeks to develop. It’s like growing something you love, sometimes it needs a lot of nurturing and sometimes it sprouts on its own.

I have this one Lucky 13 bandage dress with one lace sleeve and a lace cutout, and I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else! Where do you guys get your inspiration from?
YES! That dress is one of our faves....inspiration comes from everywhere, music, books, mags, movies..people in the street….
Where do you see Lucky 13 being in 10 years time?
At the moment, we’re focussing on getting more of an overseas presence, we recently signed on at Pixie Market in NYC (yay!) and also runway route in London.
What do you think of the new wave of bloggers coming through?
At Lucky we support bloggers, we think its great when people get a share of voice and the internet and blogging is a pretty good way to make that happen.
One of our previous interviewees, Gen (designer of This is Genevieve), would like to know: What’s the last book you read?
Just started the girl with the dragon tattoo, and already I’m like YIKES its a trilogy am I ever going to get this finished (all of us also read TONS of mags)
And what’s a random question you’d like to ask our next interviewee?
Coffee or tea?

I have a yellow sundress that I wear with a pair of boots in white similar to these. The men love it, I guess it's the rocker chic look they speak of during the interview.
It comes and goes every few years, this style, I have had my boots for at least 15 years.
Loving the style!
