Yes, Mrs Press.

Mrs Press-8

The pretty creations of Mrs Press are a rare species, I guess you could call them, of visual addictions that vintagely inclined eyes will go a little crazy for, and those otherwise obsessed will find a special place on a padded hanger for designer Clare Press' structured inspirations. As a VOGUE Veteran, we can all rest assured that Clare knows her stuff in the way a dress should fall, the cut, the colour, and the vibe, but I have to say that what started out as a hobby in thrifting has come a lot further than any hobby I've ever seen! I'm loving the soft earthy tones used with harder lines (crushing on that cape in a big way).

And, might I add, I'm quite enjoying the contrast of structured dresses and Miss Zanita's trademark soft light.

Hi Clare! How’s it going?
“Well, we’re crazy busy in the studio trying to finish the new samples for next summer, while finishing the actual collection for winter in time to deliver to our stores. An intense few weeks! There’s always this mad cross over this time of year, and again in August/September. Me so tired…even though I think there’s a bit of me that loves the pressure. That said, there is also a bit of me that thinks, ‘C’mon, it’s still 28 degrees out there. Why do you need your winter coat drop now? Give me a break!’

How did Mrs Press start out?
“I was working at Aus Vogue as an editor and started taking apart and fixing up vintage frocks as a hobby. Then I started designing my own and a new career was born.”

What would you say is the Mrs Press vibe?
“Elegance. I am obsessed with that word. I’m also a fan of grace, chic and charm. These are always my buzzwords. In terms of the collection, it’s not necessarily a vintage silhouette, but there is often that sensibility there. I like the way clothes used to be made and worn before jeans and T-shirts took over.”

Mrs Press-6

I’ve been loving the sophisticated flirtiness in your latest collections – where did your inspiration come from?
“Vintage deliciousness. Anything from a vintage fashion picture to a vintage garment, or a scene in an old movie, or the buttons up the back of a 1930s wedding dress. And yes, sometimes the costumes in Agatha Christie’s Poirot…I think I was born in the wrong era. As for flirty, well that’s one of the joys of beautiful clothes – I love the idea of clothes giving you confidence, of making your feel desirable. I don’t go in for clothes as camouflage or as a way of fitting in. Stand out, I say!”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
“I’d love to see Mrs. Press stocked overseas and to open more boutiques in Australia, perhaps one in Melbourne and one in Brisbane. That’s the dream. And I’d like to have written at least two more books – my first is out through Penguin later this year. I’d also hope that in half a decade we’d have renovated our horrible kitchen but don’t hold your breath…”
6. Which is your all time favourite Mrs Press piece?
“Perhaps the 1950s-style draped bodice ‘Violet’ dress from last summer. I still get goose bumps over this dress.”

Who’s your favourite style icon of the moment?
“Oh, too many. For W’11, I was thinking about 1940s screen sirens: Joan Crawford, Lauren Bacall, Hedy Lamarr, and also socialites from the same era: there is the most incredible photo of Slim Keith from around 1945 in this scarlet tuxedo jacket and man-style pants. It looks like 70s Saint Laurent – she was so ahead of her time. Slim is the inspiration for my Lace Bow Dress this Winter.

For next season, I am channelling Jerry Hall and Marie Helvin in 1970s Norman Parkinson shots for Vogue and Carmen Miranda – have you seen her in the Busby Berkley musical The Gang’s All Here? It’s hysterical. Look it up on Youtube – the dancing with the bananas is genius.”

MrsPressCape-1

What are bloggers to you?
“Inspiration, information, I am completely obsessed with blogs. I love Zanita (she took our look book photos this season) and Liberty London Girl and Daydream Lily and This Is Glamorous, and Shine by Three of course! I blog myself and I love discovering new ones. Blogs are the new magazines.”

Our last interviewee, designer Jaye Leigo of Somedays Lovin’, would like to know: What did you wear to your Year 12 Formal?
“I grew up in Yorkshire and the formal thing is different in England, but we did have what was called a Leaving Ball, and it was supposed to be black tie but we were all 17 and this was the 1990s so it was more Madonna meets Paula Abdul. It was basically an excuse to get very drunk at home before we arrived on stolen gin. My mum made me a strapless velvet mini dress with a load of scary burgundy faux taffeta ruffles on the skirt and I teamed it with lots of hair spray and a bad girl snarl.”

And last of all, what’s a random question would you guys like to ask the next interviewee?
“Tell us about your biggest hair mistake.”

Thanks Clare! Be sure to check out more of her work right HERE.

Aside: today was my first day of uni! Amazingly daunting. I'm now so exhausted! It's all a bit foreign to me at the moment - I'm waiting for myself to make 4000 mistakes - so we'll see how it all goes!

DITA Lavish - LimeCrime Cosmopop Lipstick - DITA Corsica

I shot these yesterday afternoon when it was too painfully hot to do anything remotely productive and I had finally come to terms with the fact that I was coming down with something of a head cold. With the rain today, It's a lot easier to feel sorry for myself, but yesterday DITA eyewear was required as a visual distraction.

Not too difficult - the DITAs are so pretty and comfortable to wear and/or look at.

I've never really thought about the quality of sunglasses but it's fairly obvious when you look at these. Sort of like my encounter with cheap corner-store pasta that boiled down to cardboard in Paris. Who knew there were grades of pasta? Opposite revelation for DITAs - I finally understand the different grades of eyewear :)

P.S. I completely forgot to announce the winner of the Chip Chop Giveaway! And our lucky winner of the super awesome tank is...

Congrats lovely! And as always, I have another giveaway for you all tomorrow :) So fret not!

P.P.S. Who feels like keeping up on Twitter? And Bloglovin' for that matter.

Aside from being insanely busy and exhausted with O-week (uni lectures start on Monday!), my sharing of New York runway favourites is mainly because I'm currently planning to make the globe-trek out there this time next year! And I like pretending that I was at this season's NYFW... to get me excessively excited for FW12/13.

But I shouldn't say that should I. I'll jinx it :)

I find that NY runways always go furthest in inspiring my actually wardrobe and kicking my personal taste around corners. I'm really enjoying this over-sized housecoat business, made street-wearable in khakis, cobalt blues and yellows, plus the patterns. Sadly, Mr Paul Smith, I don't think Sydney winters will allow an amazing polkadot blazer under and enormous pet-able coat. But once in Central Park, we can talk.

I'm also pretty happy to see that capes, sheers, pleated sheers, coloured sheers, (coloured pleated sheers) and printed maxi's haven't gone anywhere. I'm reasonably in love with that Rebecca Minkoff one in particular - a new leaning towards asymmetric hems is happily welcomed in my ickle wardrobe!

I also loved The Lake & Stars and NAHM, but I couldn't find pretty pictures big enough to post :(

So much money to be saved. So many fingers to be crossed.

Fashops.com Sheer Playsuit - EVIL TWIN Ulterior Motives Mesh Maxi from Market HQ - Lorna Jane LJ Black Collection Bikini Top - Tony Bianco Dodge Boots

These were taken on Tuesday at a gorgeous warehouse in Chippendale. So in love. How amazing would it be to sit there for a day and watch all the different lighting that happens in the 500 million rooms.

I've been toying with black sheers for a while and thought it would be fun to take the double plunge. The incredibly soft Evil Twin maxi is probably the most beautiful piece of black I've ever owned. I think it's all the sneaky pleating that does it. I've worn it out so much in this awful in-between Sydney weather and people always do double takes. I've figured out some fun ways of tucking it for a million-skirts-in-one function too. Amazing.

Much like the incredible. Neon. Bikini top. I never thought I'd be saying this about neons. But I am. I need to find more black peek-a-boo outerwear for such cyans and pinks :)

My reasoning is that the conservativeness of the long skirt balances the open neon kapow :p

Wig Wam.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I've been meaning to do an all-hail dance to SHAPE SHIFTR's latest Wig Wam collection for quite some time now. The tribal heat, I suppose you could say, captured in the dusty colours and spacious fits of all the pieces is exactly what I'd want to be seen in when caught in the desert with awesome headdresses on rotation.

And fishbraided teal hair.

My officially-healthy preoccupation with generously cut chiffon and cut-outs is now up tenfold! I'm particularly liking that earthy rust colour - facepaint-and-swishing-in-these-asymmetrical-skirts-time :)

Invisible stripes.

AL&ALICIA Blazer - Somedays Lovin' Cropped Tank - ANISE Tribal Bones Pants - Tony Bianco Dodge Boots - Rebecca Minkoff M.A.C Clutch

A super fast post to share what I had to throw on super fast this afternoon to substitute a friend who was meant to be substituting his mum at a parent event of his sister's. In short, I ended up making conversation with people old enough to be my parents. And people thought I had a child when I was 10. It was awkward.

But at least my favourite visual-kapow clutch was cooler than theirs :) In hindsight, I quite enjoy how the stripes in the tank sort of mirror the fishbone tie-dye in these super awesome pants that will hit Autumn so hard once it's no longer 35 celcius (yeah there was no air-con - I suffered a little).

Despite their age, I still got compliments on my beloved Tony Bianco shoesies!

Speaking of which, I stopped in at the SENSO warehouse sale... and check out the babies I bagged HERE!

OM NOM NOM. So excited to break them in.

Chip Chopping.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

A turn for the spontaneous and making-me-miss-real-Summer. Real Summer (i.e. painful heat that gives you no choice but to go to the beach) didn't really start until after Christmas. And now that Autumn is just over a week away, I'm sitting and brainstorming ways of layering my Summer favourites. Thankfully, Chip Chop's newest collection, Blame it on Rio, is an amazing sanctuary of colour, bare legs and party party pizazz of... Rio :)

It's been a while since I've worn a statement tee, but these are definitely happening for me. With several packets of accompanying confetti. It's interesting how the right combination of colours can compliment such a simple tank or tee - just as easily dressed up or down.

Check out more HERE.

J'adore :)

And while we're in a celebratory mood, I would like to announce that the winner of the EMU Valentine's Day giveaway is...

Congrats lovely lady!! And for those of you who missed out: comfort food while browsing the happenings at the EMU NYFW runway show (HERE). Oh and there are plenty of giveaway coming right up! Stay tuned :)

Party in my wardrobe.

Some time ago, the lovely Brooke from over at The Style Net asked if I would like to show my wardrobe to the world. Which meant I had to make it respectable (my mother thanks you, Brooke). Today, I finally got the time to sit down and pull together everything I'd filmed, so here it is!

A lot of you ask me how much I spend on clothes, how many articles of clothing I own, how big my wardrobe is, etc. So I guess this answers all of that! Sadly, my wardrobe is fairly unspectacular... but this makes for fun mixing and matching :)

Let me know what you think of my silly editing skills!

P.S. the fabulous Valentine's Day giveaway ends tomorrow night! Get entering HERE.

One Teaspoon of radassery.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of joining fellow One Teaspoon (and blog) lovers at the amazing One Teaspoon store on Crown Street - really, it's amazing. I wish it were my house. Who needs anything else when you have leopard print carpet. And a giant zebra. And you're surrounded by incredible FW11 collection pieces.

It was so amazing meeting Miss-Talented-Designer, Jamie Blakely, who was so sweet! (And whose leather shorts I really wanted). I'm not sure weather it was for better or worse that I pretty much tried on the entire store - as soon I'm done saving up, those Rangers, neon pink bra, skirt that made me feel Victorian, and every oversized knit in the place will be mine to wrap up in a corner and play dressups with. Daily.

Shades of Black.

IMG_7967

ANISE Rubble Trubble Tank in Black - YesStyle.com Bandeau - YesStyle.com Draped Harems - Tony Bianco Dodge Boots in Ash Suede

I managed to steal a friend's camera for the afternoon to happy snap this super sparkly tank for your enjoyment (despite the shocking overcast weather today). I quite like the slight girliness and insane texture it adds to my boyish harems. Do boys wear harems? They should. They're that breezy and comfortable.

Is it bad that as soon as the weather gets a bit Autumn-y, I autopilot to black? Although sequins are a good start to crazy cold-weather-wear this year.
