Decipher the Day: Chrissy Lau.

I was more than a little excited to receive my first ever reader sketch from the very talented Chrissy Lau of Decipher the Day. I've been a fan of Chrissy's amazing illustrations for several months now, and I'm so honoured that she drew this super cute one of one of my outfits!

Chrissy was born in Yorkshire (UK), but is now here in Sydney (the best place to be :D), working her illustrative magic in gorgeous collaborations, and being featured in magazine after magazine for her eye and hand for adorable concepts. How she manages to get such amazing images out of a fountain pen and ink beats me, but she does it with style and is now represented Illustration Room (Australia). Some ground rules she swears by are:

1. Trying something new: Not getting obsessed with one medium for too long – she started stickering her illustrations all over town! :O If I were having a bad day, coming across an illustration of Chrissy's would turn that right around
2. Blogging and interacting: Chrissy has the cutest blog, as I said!
3. Dream and follow your dream: Inspirations stories and sticking to a goal is definitely something she stnds by.

Chrissy also just got married (congrats!) and, might I add, looked so stunning. She's now off to England for family fun time, and to project-manage the opening of a coffee shop (:O), but I thought I'd ask some fun questions before she goes:

Favourite food? We're pretty blessed in Sydney with our choice of food. I'm a big food fan so I would have to give you a list. The English side of me loves greasy fish and chips by the seaside, my chinese heritage loves Yum Cha, my creative side appeals to sushi because it is so beautifully crafted and presented. On a naughty day I am ashamed to say it but I do enjoy a McDonald's Happy Meal! I'm also quite partial to the odd cup cake or two....in fact the list could go on...

What you would take with you on a summer picnic? Oooh I love cheese so it would have to be a nice mature cheddar cheese, a fresh baguette, some delicious olives and sundried tomatoes and a home made garlic houmous dip, all washed down with a ice cold glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Besides the food I would take my husband, a sketch book, my black fountain pen and red pen to do a few doodles. We recently bought a really cute ukulele from a music store in Newtown so we would take that with us too, I can only play a few tunes so I would force Darren to serenade me as he is extremely musically talented :-)

Shorts, skirts or skorts? On a personal level I'm a big fan of the maxi dress and long flowy skirts. I'm not too keen on my legs so you'll never see me in a pair of shorts or a short skirt. I do like to lounge around in dresses with a pair of footless tights - that's my staple outfit.

Which of your illustrations would you like to come to life? What a brilliant question. I'd like all the cute girlies I draw with long flowy, voluptuous hair to come alive. They'd probably sit there drinking cups of tea and having a giggle. I do take a lot of inspiration from people and objects I see in real life so I suppose they are alive in some way. Lady Gaga has a great sense of style and she could be the nearest thing to one of my illustrations.

After my Philosophy exam this morning (fist pump), I conveniently had the rest of the day off to spend with the lovely Tash and Katie, involving lots of messing around with pretty things and trekking places in search of macaroons (which, sadly failed). I'll get some fun photos up of our day over the weekend, but these are just some shots of what I was wearing.

I received this beautiful button down from the gorgeous Twee of Ezzentric Topz Vintage yesterday, and cannot remember being more obsessed with any one vintage piece. It arrived with such perfect timing too - I altered these cut-offs last weekend, and decided that any non-vintage top just wouldn't cut it (man I'm puntastic) for a pretty, rough-around-the-edges vine. I'm currently dreaming up a million possibilities for this semi-sheer, super-soft top, so watch this space, people! You guys should definitely check out more of Ezzentric Topz - Twee has this knack of finding the most amazing stand-out pieces. I want to eat them all :)

La dama: Letty Wiley.

Meet Letty - the gorgeous girl behind La dama, which is fast becoming one of my favourite sources of inspiration and wishlist-extenders :) Letty has such a fun sense of humour, and sent through some of her style inspiration to go with the awesome pieces she holds at the store. Here's a bit about how La dama came about and Miss Letty herself.

Starting Out:
La dama started out on ebay almost six years ago. I sold mainly vintage clothing and after doing this on and off for so long I started fantasizing about started my own online boutique. That same week I came across an article about a brand called TEAMO from Mexico. Their line was inspired by the day of the day of the dead holiday and there was a picture of a girl wearing a bright orange dress with ruffles all down the side and on her wrist was a big clear skull bangle...I loved it! I carefully ripped out the page and put it up on my vision board for inspiration (the picture is still on my desk) I went to Barnes and noble one day and bought a little blank notebook and I started to write down all the designers I would carry in my fantasy store and TEAMO was number one. A short time later I talked to my friend Danielle, who only happens to build awesome websites and we threw around ideas for a couple of weeks and then La Dama was born!

The 'La Dama Vibe':
Affordable, independent style that strikes a balance between distinctive, fashion-forwardness and classic, simple luxury.

The Plans:

I'm working on getting some yet-to-be-revealed designers for fall that I am really excited about. Making more jewelry for the store, it's such a cool feeling to know that someone out there is wearing and loving something that you made with your own little hands. I'm also dying to take a trip of some sort because I haven't had one for years! I'll probably go to New York with my best friend in September to check out some showrooms and maybe go to a fashion show or two.

The Trend Forecast:
I'm not quite sure. I just wear what I like and whatever peaks my interest. I love hair braiding and variations of it. Also, moto jackets, backpacks, and a return to easy dressing, which I have to say is my favorite! Long breezy tanks that double as dresses and body jewelry, which I love... perhaps all in conjunction. Later this summer, La Dama is getting some great simple, yet incredibly wearable, pieces from Sophomore that will be really condusive to this look. We will also be getting Lonely Hearts Lingerie, which will look pretty fantastic underneath with just a little bit of a peek-a-boo.

On Bloggers:

I think they are great. Fashion bloggers have started to take over the world in the last couple of years. Where you used to see celebrities in front rows at fashion shows, now you see the bloggers. This all makes perfect sense to me because they are representing us..the everyday person, so when someone like Rumi from fashiontoast posts something about a new designer shes into, you can be assured that her thousands of readers will be researching that same designer in minutes because the chances that they can afford them are pretty good. I wouldn't be where I am today with La Dama if it wasn't for the fashion bloggers who took a chance on my new store 9 months ago. Rumi, Krystal from whatisrealityanyway, Vanessa and of course you Margaret!

The Future:

Eventually I want to expand the store and sell vintage. I was doing it when La dama first opened but I didn't like mixing the old and new in the same category, so I have something special planned to separate the two...but that probably won't happen for a little while and I don't want to give away too much.

So last week, you guys all commented with some lovely questions for me to answer, so here they are! (Preceded by another contextually random shot that Katie took of me a few weeks ago)

Do you have any staples in your wardrobe you wear all year round?
I hate buying things that I can only wear in one particular season, so I guess most of my wardrobe gets layered like a crazy layer cake in Winter :)

I would like to ask you what you think is a secret to a popular blog/What is the best way to gain followers/How did your blog become so popular?
To be yourself. Pretty logical, no? Nobody else is you → you stand out in a crowd of people pretending to be the same someone else. People look for someone they can recognise as a real person → they want to get to know you as a real person → lots of bloggety blog friends.

How are you today?? -_-'' lol
Excellent :) A little sleep-deprived, though.

Are you into thrifted clothes?
My wardrobe isn't bursting with them, but I do love the feeling of finding an absolute gem in racks and racks of ickies.

How do you afford all these clothes and where do you get them from?
All of you long-time followers would know that I spend weeks deciding whether or not I want something, and price is a pretty big factor towards the final verdict - but it's always worth it. Some people have this idea that I have an eternal walk-in wardrobe. There's this neat little trick called mix-and-match/layering/wear-it-backwards :) As for where I get them from: I'm pretty sure that by the end of the year, I'll have been to every store and market in Sydney. I kid you not.

When do you feel the most confident?
When I'm performing/speaking on a stage... with the lights super bright so I can't see the audience :)

What inspired you to start this blog/What made you want to start a blog?
A humble pair of Jean Paul Gaultier tights. Nobody knew what the hell I was raving about. Voilà: Shine by Three. (Speaking of which, can anybody help me find a pair of those tights? A year on and I still haven't managed to hunt some down!)

Do you have any change from you to start this blog?
My approach and direction haven't really changed. Certainly, I'm a year older with better photography skills and bigger ideas, but I'm still little old me.

If you could choose one person to have dinner with, who would it be and why?
I'm going to say... Anna Wintour - I'd bob my hair and wear giant sunnies and we could have a stare-off. Oh and she's kind of superwoman.

What is your dream or expectation in life?

To have that feeling of being absolutely happy as often as possible.

What's your summer like? Is it winter there or something?

Aussie summer is the reason for my existence. And damn straight it's winter! I can't feel my fingers.

Exaggeration.

What's the next best thing after blogging?

Sitting in non-awkward silence with my favourite people.

Are you currently pursuing your dreams?

School makes it a bit hard. But I sure will be by the end of this year.

Who are your favorite musicians?

At the moment, I'm loving The Like, Brighten and Dash and Will.

If you weren't blogging and you could have any dream job - what would that be/What is your dream career, my darling? :)

Am I allowed to blog and have a dream job? I've actually gotten to the point where I want to do so many things, that I don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

What camera do you have/What type of camera do you use? :)

I technically share a Canon 7D with Dad, but he keeps running off with it. So I switch between that, a Canon Powershot, a friend's Nikon D90, and another friend's Canon 500D.

Why do you blog?

It makes me happy.

What do you plan to do when you graduate schoolies?
Well. The day of my last exam, I'll sit and wonder what to do with myself. Then I'm going beach-camping down the coast with my favourite people in the world, then (possibly) Melbourne for party party times. I'm hoping to travel a bit over the next couple of years, but I really don't know what I want to do in uni!

Do you edit your photos before posting them?

I love raw photography too much to do a lot of editing - I tend to just fix up the contrast or backlighting if it needs to be done.

What style do you like the most?

Eclectic, vintage, minimalist, pow-wow.

What's your favourite fashion blog that you just can't cope without?
Does FashionGoneRogue count as a fashion blog? Because I really don't know where I'd be without it :)

Mark Basa.

Mark Basa's work has been an object of my admiration for quite some time now, and I can't believe that I haven't posted his work sooner! I met Mark at the Sydney Fashion Forward Festival, and I can tell you that his passion for his work is so evident - and I guess that translates to amazing tees :)

I asked him to share a bit of his approach to design with you, my lovely readers, and I think it really reinforces what I've said:

My design philosophy is generally design how I please and do what I want. I'm stubborn in the way I won't listen to anyones ideas who I feel might be negative. I don't like to follow trends but I do get inspired from the top designers. More so now as I'm maturing designing wise. I have a picture in my mind, a garment from top to bottom or a single shirt and I try using different media on paper. I'll usually do seven or even more illustrations before I'm happy with anything.

This first ever collection I created is unique. It's bright, bold, has a broad range of designs to suit everyone in my target market and out. I wanted to get people who may not of been "Mark Basa customers" at first and sort of give them a small taste of what is going to become. Sort of a teaser with this range, see how the fashion junkie feels about it. So far the feedback has been incredible! Also I think as I'm sort of a "product" now modeling and designing that both will help each other. One will be spoken in conjunction with the other which means more success on my behalf and anyone working beside me.

DRESSEDUNDRESSED: Takeshi Kitazawa and Emiko Satoi.

Upon being introduced to DRESSEDUNDRESSED's work, I spent days staring at the angles in their AW10 lookbook and debating whether or not I wanted to ditch my wardrobe and go into a completely minimalist phase. Designers Takeshi and Emiko then pointed out how versatile each piece was, and we came to the conclusion that I could, in fact, work every piece into my nutty style for the edge against all my fellow Sydney-siders. Win :)

Your pieces are so incredibly edgy! Where do you get your inspiration?
ありがとうございます。インスパイアーはコレクションの度に違いますが、今回の2010AUTUMN WINTER Collectionは60sのサスペンス映画と90sのグランジからインスパイアーを受け、僕達のフィルターを通し、自分達の世界観で表現しています。一貫して言えるのは、連続性と進化を重要視している事。日本的ミニマリズムが根底にあります。

Thank you very much! Each collection is inspired from different things. We present collections by our own vision. Though our eyes, 2010 AUTUMN WINTER COLLECTION is inspired from 60s suspense movie and 90s grunge. We are consistent in continuity and evolve which as important. These are basis on Japanese minimalism.

What are you working on at the moment for DRESSEDUNDRESSED?
二元性、対比性、対義性の結合。つまり、異なる要素、男性らしさと女性らしさ、未来と過去等、対となるものの結合をテーマとし、パターンも含め、アセクシャルなコレクションについて取り組んでいる。

What kind of work goes into designing and releasing one piece?
デザインとディレクションは僕（北澤）と佐藤の男女2人で行っている。男女の目線からの服作りを一つのコレクションで行うからこそ、前質問で答えた,アセクシャルなコレクションに繋がっていると思う。他、チームで何名かのパターンナー、生産管理…etc 複数名と共に、１つのコレクションをつくりあげている。多くの要素が集まって一つのものをつくるからこそ、一つ一つのアイテムに個性が出来ると思う。僕達は本当に良いメンバーに恵まれていると思います。

Design and Direction by me (Kitazawa) and Sato, in two men and women. Both eye making one collection, it related unisex collection. The other team working on making pattern and production management. The collection made by many peoples hands to releasing one piece. Those elements gathering together makes one piece which become individuality piece. We think, we are so given great members surrounding us.

Who’s your favourite style icon of the moment?

Those of you who've been hanging around for long enough would know of my pickiness when shopping for the perfect stripes. For those of you who haven't, I have a pickiness when shopping for the perfect stripes :) Visual: Margaret staring down a tee/dress/sweater because the stripes are too fat/too thin/too close together.

But here they are. I was so close to buying the cropped version of this tee as well, but then I figured it would be more logically (and justifiably) bought when this Winter runs away and cropped tees with high-waisted cut-offs are acceptable again.

The sun today was a little schizophrenic, which makes me hope that the week-long downpour forecasted for Monday might change its mind - I'd like to run around with tees-as-dresses and layered tights more often than what has been possible. Please. :D

Every so often I come across a label that just oozes coolness. I don't really know how else to put it, apart from seeing the lookbook and thinking "I want to be her." JOYRICH is definitely one of them - they have the edge. That is all that needs to be said by me.

Tell us a bit about how JOYRICH came about.

JOYRICH (the brand as well as the store) is described as a Japanese, Westcoast fusion which launched its unique style upon opening its doors near Fairfax High on Melrose, here in Los Angeles in December 2007.

What would you say is the JOYRICH vibe?

Our look aims to create a progressive concept of high-end, yet accessible apparel. JOYRICH supports the vision of being casual and laid-back, yet rich and luxurious. It’s a mindset and an aesthetic.

Can you give us a quick run-down of what a day at the JOYRICH studio is like?

We have a lot of fun with the creative process. Inspiration is key and occasional “field trips” give us a good jumpstart to come back to our desks and make it happen. Everyday it’s an ongoing process of building the next collection- concepting, mapping, experimenting, its all in constant motion.

I love how JOYRICH is such a fun mash-up of styles! Where do you get your inspiration from?

Anywhere and everywhere. Our eyes are always open for inspiration. The past 2 collections have been heavily influenced by iconic looks of the 90’s, and are drawing from nostalgic looks of earlier decades for our upcoming Spring/Summer ‘11 collection.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

The JOYRICH brand will continue to evolve and progress, with more collaborations, brand extensions, global retail locations, and a stronger market presence with the support of our fans.

Who’s your favourite style icon of the moment?

We appreciate diversity, its hard to nominate one person for such a prestigious position…

What do you think of the new wave of bloggers coming through?

Blogging has become a bit over saturated but there are definitely some gems out there who bring something fresh to the table and it’s the support of bloggers and the readers who really have given young brands the opportunity to reach a broader audience in a short amount of time. Blogging has evolved into an integral part of what makes the fashion world go round.

Question time.

Wendy Brandes is a name to keep on the back of your hand for being in the know about eye-catching jewellery. Not only are her earrings worn by Samantha in SATC2 (serious WOW), but Wendy also has a knack of bringing some fun into luxury jewellery - something that may not be so surprising when you realise what a fun person she is:

So just to start with, how did Wendy Brandes come about?
I wanted to wear matte, 18K yellow gold poison rings and there weren't any. So I made them.

How would you describe the Wendy Brandes vibe?

A little humorous, a little macabre, always the highest craftsmanship.

What are your thoughts on the role of jewellery in an outfit?

The more the merrier.

What kind of work goes into releasing one piece of jewellery?

There's so much: the inspiration, the sketching, the wax model, the creation of the first mold, the silver model, the creation of the second mold, the gold version, gem-buying, the setting, the polishing...and I'm leaving things out here!

Which is your favourite piece from the latest collection?

The Chicken in the Egg locket. People can't believe their eyes when they see a locket open twice.

I read that one of your pieces is worn by Samantha (Kim Cattral) in Sex and the City 2! Congratulations! Are you hoping to work towards similar things in future?

Definitely. It's a great way to get pieces seen by a lot of people. It's also helpful for people to see jewelry in action. I feel still photos, no matter how beautiful, can't quite capture the wearer's experience.

Who’s your favourite style icon of the moment?

Lady Gaga.

What’s the biggest jewellery trend you see coming through this year?

Personally, I want to work with more bright colors, like in my Marie Antoinette ring.

Rubi Shoes Snuggle Scarf - Boutique Leather Jacket - Nightcap Clothing Black Maxi

So I'm a massive idiot and didn't get any proper photos of what I thought was a perfect ensemble. It really doesn't get much better than a snood (SNOOD), leather jacket and a maxi dress on the first day of Winter. Instead, these photos are a freak display of me looking like I have no hair, on account of my favourite scarf being hung at all angles on my head, and pretty minimal visibility of anything I'm wearing due to the freak contrast in lighting.

That's right. Freak.
